It’s all about the block editor.
WordPress has now released version 5.9 and taken another step forward in its goal of full site editing via the block editor, previously know as the Gutenberg editor.
As always with the first release of the new year WP 5.9 includes a new theme Twenty Twenty-Two to highlight the changes made in the last 12 months in WordPress core.
To assist with full site editing WordPress 5.9 includes the following new blocks:
- Navigation
- Template Part
- Header
- Footer
- Post Author
- Next Post
- Previous Post
- Post Comments
- Term Description
- Archive Title
Finally some other additions include style wide styles in the block editor. A lot of new APIs for developers to build with and finally some support for PHPUnit 8.x testing for developers.
Should you upgrade
Yes, as with all WordPress updates you should update as soon as possible to maintain your site performance and security. While this release doesn’t contain any security fixes it does address a number of performance problems.
Most of my clients will not benefit from the new features in this release as current themes in use on all my sites do not support full site editing.
