When it comes to having a visually appealing website, high-quality images play a crucial role. However, using poor quality or large-sized images can hamper your website performance and make your pages slower to load. One solution to this problem is optimising your images. In this blog, we will discuss how to use Photoshop for optimising images for your website.

Step 1: Resizing the Image

Open your image in Photoshop. Go to the “Image” menu and select “Image Size”. You will see the current size, resolution, and dimension of the image. For web optimisation, it is best to have a resolution of 72 pixels per inch and to reduce your image size to match your website’s content area. If your website’s content area is 1000×800 pixels, resize your image to that size. You can do this by changing the width and height to the desired values. Ensure that the “Resample” checkbox is ticked and select “Bicubic Sharper” from the dropdown menu. You can then save your resized image by selecting “Save As” and choosing your file format.

Step 2: Reducing the File Size

Images with a large file size can slow down your website’s performance. To reduce the file size, go to the “File” menu and select “Save for Web”. A new window will appear where you can adjust the quality and format settings. JPEG and PNG are the most common formats used for web images. JPEG is preferred for photographs, whereas PNG is best for graphics with text or logos. Adjust the quality to achieve a balance between file size and image clarity. Once you are satisfied with the settings, save the image.

Step 3: Compressing the Image

Another way to optimise your image is by compressing it. Compression reduces the file size without reducing image quality. Go to the “File” menu and select “Export” and then “Export as”. The “Export As” window will appear. Select JPEG from the format dropdown menu and adjust the quality to your desired value. You can also select the “Progressive” checkbox which loads the image in stages, giving the illusion of faster load times. Finally, select “Optimise” from the “Image Options” dropdown menu. This will compress the file size and result in faster page load times.

Step 5: Testing Your Optimised Image

After all the optimisation steps are completed, make sure that the image is still visually appealing. Check that it loads quickly and is not pixelated or distorted. You can use tools such as Google’s PageSpeed Insights or GTmetrix to diagnose any issues with image size or load times. As a rule, your page load time should be under 3 seconds.

Optimising your web images enhances your website’s performance, speeds up loading times, and improves your site’s aesthetics. By following the above steps, you can optimise your images for the web using Photoshop. Remember always to test your images and make sure that the image quality is not compromised. Keep your website user-friendly and accessible with optimised images!
